The face of Cristiano Ronaldo was turned into a gigantic graffiti and put on the three-storey wall of Kazan, Russia, before the arrival of Portugal in the country for the FIFA 2017 Confederations Cup. The mayor arranged for artists to decorate a building such that Ronaldo and his boys could see the artwork. They Portuguese boys stayed in a hotel that shared the courtyard with the graffiti.

According to Dmitri Kudinov, the main graffiti artist on the team that did the work, the artists were requested to do the painting following the decision of the mayor of Kazan to have the house redecorated, while taking a walk through the city.

The artwork has been dubbed as the mural that no one can see, since it was painted on the facade of a private property, and was only visible to the guests at the hotel in which Portugal’s squad were staying during the Confederations Cup tournament. The players could see the beautiful depiction of the forward. However, the regular citizens did not have access to it.

Fans, and even the media, were not allowed to go inside and view it. However, the hotel guests could see it properly, as many of the rooms faced the artwork. So, 23-year-old Kazan resident, Arten Maltsev, who happened to be standing outside the hotel, took photos of the mural, and made it available for the people to see.

Police officers stationed outside the hotel did not clarify why the public was not allowed near the building. The only explanation given by the security guard was that it is a private area. However, local media distributed and published handouts of the artwork, which attracted the attention of the people.

The graffiti was based on an image of Ronaldo winking at his fellow teammates, after his former MUFC teammate, Wayne Rooney, was sent off during a match at the World Cup 2016 in which Portugal and England faced each other. Kudinov, the member of the local collective called Supernova, which made the painting, said that the mural was completed in five days, and needed 300 cans of paint. Supernova also created murals in other parts of the municipality to mark the beginning of the Confed Cup.

Supernova also created murals in other parts of the municipality to mark the beginning of the Confed Cup, in which Portugal played their first match on June 18. They went as far as the semifinal round of the tournament, in which they lost to Chile. Ronaldo scored two goals, made one prominent assist, and earned three Man of the Match awards.
